A riot involving nearly two dozen inmates broke out at a juvenile detention facility in Okeechobee.
According to a report from the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office, it happened Monday evening around at the True Core facility on NE 168th Street.
Facility administrators called the sheriff's office for help in stopping the incident.
Investigators said the inmates barricaded themselves in their pods, broke the glass, and destroyed furniture. The inmates also broke off the locks on the dorm doors. Water flooded one pod due to a broken water line.
The sheriff's office responded with K9's and said deputies did not use any force to get the inmates under control. True Core staff members put the inmates back into non-damaged cells.
The inmates, who are from all over including Boynton Beach, Okeechobee, and Lake Worth, all face charges of Affray/Riot and criminal mischief of $1,000 or more.
The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice sent the following statement to CBS12 News Tuesday evening:
"The safety and security of the youth in our care and custody is our top priority. This incident is disturbing, and we are grateful to the Okeechobee Sheriff’s Office for responding quickly and helping to safely resolve the situation. The Department is investigating the incident and will hold the contracted provider responsible for any failures that allowed this to happen.”-DJJ Secretary Simone Marstiller
